Celebrating Romain Bourger: The Architect Behind UKSA Technical Committee excellence

With the highly anticipated 2026 UK Sommelier of the Year competition just a week away, final preparations are officially in full swing. While this year's candidates are busy refining their skills and hitting the books for the final sprint, we want to look behind the curtain at one of our team driving the UK Sommelier Academy (UKSA) forward—a true cornerstone of our organization: Romain Bourger, the Head of our Technical Committee.

At the UKSA, our foundational mission is to support, mentor, and elevate hospitality and wine professionals across the country. Achieving that requires leadership from individuals who don't just understand the industry, but who have actively conquered its highest peaks. Romain is the embodiment of that standard.

A Journey Crafted in Excellence

Romain’s path within the hospitality industry is defined by a deep commitment to technical precision and service brilliance. After sharpening his skills under the legendary mentorship of the late Gérard Basset OBE, MS, MW, Romain rose to become the Director of Wine & Beverage at the prestigious Vineyard Hotel in Newbury, Berkshire.

In 2019, his persistence, technical knowledge, and absolute composure under immense pressure earned him the highly coveted title of UK Sommelier of the Year. Far from a final destination, this landmark triumph served as the foundation for his next chapter: giving back to the community that helped shape him.

Elevating the Academy: From Winner to Architect

Today, Romain has successfully transitioned from the high-stakes stage of a competitor to the brilliant architect behind the scenes. Now in his third consecutive year as the Head of our Technical Committee, he brings his firsthand experience as a champion to the very core of the UKSA’s educational and competitive frameworks.

Designing a modern sommelier syllabus requires a delicate balance of honoring timeless traditions while adapting to an ever-evolving global beverage landscape. Romain is the driving force behind this evolution, tirelessly working to:

  • Oversee the Framework and Integrity: He ensures that the UKSA’s examination, evaluation, and certification processes meet rigorous international benchmarks.

  • Design Complex, Real-World Scenarios: From blind tastings to intense restaurant service simulations, Romain crafts tasks that push modern sommeliers to expand their technical boundaries.

  • Collaborate with Global Experts: He works alongside our panel of world-class judges to keep our programs fair, objective, and perfectly aligned with the fast-moving hospitality profession.

Our Sincere Gratitude

The strength of the UK Sommelier Academy relies entirely on the generosity and expertise of our Board. We are incredibly privileged to have Romain leading the charge for our technical standards. His dedication guarantees that the next generation of UK talent is trained, tested, and supported to the absolute highest degree.

Thank you, Romain, for your immense contribution, your generosity as a mentor, and your unwavering commitment to elevating the UKSA community! ***

To all the candidates putting the final touches on their preparation over the next week—the entire UKSA team is cheering you on. We can't wait to see your hard work come to fruition on the stage.
