A Masterclass in Kentish Terroir: UKSA Southern Club at Balfour Winery

The UK Sommelier Academy recently headed to the heart of Kent for an unforgettable day at Balfour Winery, often cited as one of the most beautiful estates in the UK. For our members, it was a day defined by technical depth, world-class hospitality, and a true celebration of English viticulture.

The day began with a deep-dive masterclass led by Head Winemaker Fergus Elias. Fergus’s passion and humility made for a fascinating session, as he walked our members through the nuances of their current range and shared an exclusive "sneak preview" of their highly anticipated premium red wine project.

Following the tasting, members enjoyed an "epic" lunch of local Kentish produce before heading out into the 400-acre Hush Heath Estate. A walking tour through the ancient woodlands and wildflower meadows provided the perfect backdrop to discuss the unique terroir that gives Balfour wines their signature elegance and acidity.

A Word of Thanks This event was a highlight of our Southern Club calendar, and we owe a huge thank you to our incredible hosts. Specifically, we would like to thank Fergus Elias for his time and expertise, and Jordan Painter for the impeccable organization and warm hospitality that made the day so "spoiling" for our members.

Finally, a special thanks to our Southern Club Director, Polly Gibson, for her leadership in coordinating such a successful away day.

As Polly noted: “Days like this are such a privilege for our members. I was blown away by the quality and style of the wines on show.”
