Today, March 4 2024 is ASI Diploma Exam day. We asked Gold Diploma holder Romain Bourger: Why do the ASI Diploma?

Romain Bourger (Young Sommelier of the Year Competition in 2016, won an Acorn Award in 2018, Catey Wine and Spirit Ambassador Winner 2023 and the UK Sommelier of the Year in 2019) achieved a gold ASI Diploma in 2022. We asked him a few questions about why he did it, how he found it and the benefits he believes there are in taking it:

What motivated you to do the ASI Diploma?

I wanted to take the exam to have a new goal to focus on in my studies and also to continue to improve my network.

How did you find the exam and were there any additional benefits from the day for you apart from achieving the qualification?

The level of the exam is high and covers a wide range of knowledge, not only wine but also viticulture, oenology and more. It was great to take on board the standards of the ASI.

How did you find the support of the UK Sommelier Academy in doing the ASI Diploma?

Great, it is a great association to be part of that offers amazing support and training at all levels.

What advantages (if any) do you think you have holding the ASI Diploma?

I think it is gaining a fast-growing recognition and setting high standards worldwide for the Sommellerie and it is a fantastic opportunity to be part of it.

Would you recommend other Sommelier's in your position to do the exam?

Indeed! It is an amazing learning experience and a fantastic opportunity to meet like-minded people
