Nina and Romané Basset (UKSA Vice President and General Secretary) were thrilled to award Brian Julyan MS, founder and President of the Court of Master Sommeliers Europe, the Gerard Basset trophy, at this year’s UK Sommelier of the Year Competition —as a testament to his profound impact on the world of wine service.

He is a pillar of global sommellerie and recognition of for his extraordinary contribution to the world of wine and hospitality. Brian earned his Master Sommelier diploma in 1972 and was instrumental in founding the Court of Master Sommeliers in 1977, where he later served as Chief Executive and now President of CMS Europe.

His vision, integrity, and unwavering dedication to education have shaped the modern sommelier profession across the globe. This award not only recognises his personal achievements but also celebrates the profound influence he has had as a mentor and role model to generations of sommeliers—including the late Gérard Basset OBE MW MS, whose own extraordinary legacy was built upon the foundations Brian helped create.
